In 1882, China’s first electric light suddenly lit up in Shanghai, the dawn of the electric age in the ancient farming society. After more than half a century of difficult development, my country’s power industry is still very backward.

After the founding of New China in 1949, the electric power industry, an important basic industry of the national economy, was reborn and made great progress. In January 1954, the Songdong-Li Line, the first 220 kV transmission line in my country, was completed, and the 220 kV backbone grid in the northeast was gradually formed.

In the 1970s, the Northwest was still without electricity. The Liujiaxia-Tianshui-Shaanxi Guanzhong 330kV power transmission and transformation project, which was designed, manufactured and installed by my country itself, “quenched its thirst” for Shaanxi, which is extremely short of electricity.

When the spring breeze of reform and opening up blows all over the country, the electric power industry also ushered in the spring of construction. In 1979, the China Electric Power Industry Conference determined that the development of the electric power industry should take the road of networking, and the interconnection planning and construction process of the power grid was started. The Henan Pingdingshan-Hubei Wuchang 500kV ultra-high voltage power transmission and transformation project, which was put into operation in December 1981, opened the prelude to the development of my country’s 500kV power grid.

After 20 years of rapid development, by 2002, my country’s power grid has formed six regional power grids in Northeast China, North China, Central China, East China, Northwest China and South China.

As the voltage level of the power grid continues to increase and the scale of the network continues to expand, problems such as uneven distribution of energy resources and power load levels in various regions have become increasingly apparent. In 2005, my country started the preliminary research work of UHVDC project.

In August 2006, my country’s first UHV AC power transmission and transformation project – 1000 kV Jindongnan-Nanyang-Jingmen UHV AC test demonstration project started. In January 2009, starting from Shanxi, a coal base, and traversing the Central Plains, an ultra-high voltage transmission line from Nanyang, Henan to Jingmen, Hubei was born. This is a new beginning, my country’s power industry has opened a new chapter, and China has become the leader and promoter of the development of UHV transmission technology.

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, a series of UHV key projects such as Harbin-Zheng DC, Binjin DC, Ning-Zhejiang DC, Xitai DC, and Zhaqing DC have been put into operation, and the ability to transmit power across provinces and regions has been significantly improved.

On September 26, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the two major innovative projects that marked my country’s power grid technology reaching a new height in the world’s power field – Zhundong-Wannan ±1100 kV UHV DC transmission project, Sutong 1000 kV The AC UHV GIL integrated pipe gallery project was completed and put into operation.

Seventy years of trials and hardships, the large power grid traverses China. Driven by economic and social development and scientific and technological progress, my country’s power grid has gradually become a super-large power grid with the world’s strongest power transmission capacity, the largest new energy grid-connected scale, and the longest record of safe operation.

With the rapid development of clean energy, scientific and technological progress and the continuous improvement of the level of informatization, the power grid is moving towards intelligence. In 2010 and 2011, “strengthening the construction of smart grid” was written into the “Government Work Report” twice and included in the “Outline of the Twelfth Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development”, and my country’s smart grid has entered a stage of rapid development.

In recent years, my country has carried out a lot of work in smart grid planning and research, technical research, equipment development, standard construction and engineering pilots, and has achieved a series of results. The international influence of smart grids has been significantly improved.

In 2009, the company proposed a smart grid development strategy, and the pace of smart grid construction has been significantly accelerated.
